As parents you will know the safety of the children on the roads around the school are a constant worry. Here is a list of some of the problems children face on a daily basis:
-
Cars breaking the speed limit of 20 miles per hour on School Road and Coronation Road.
-
Cars parking illegally on restricted areas near to school, blocking children’s vision when they are trying to cross the road.
-
Children (and sometimes adults) crossing the roads in unsafe places (eg next to junctions), where there are too many directions of traffic for them to safely see and cross.
-
Children getting out of cars on the road side of the vehicle instead of the pavement side.
- Additional road congestion as a result of the Coronation Court building site.
Several parents have expressed concerns to the Parent Council about heavy plant from the building site, being moved on the road around 9 0′clock in the morning and 3.15/3.20 in the afternoon. Whild the driver can easily see vehicles approaching, there has been at least one occasion when a child was behind a heavy plant vehicle and the driver could not see the child.
I have ben to the site office to speak with someone with responsiblity for Health and Safety about our concerns. Like us, the person I spoke to is very concerned about the safety of the children, he told me he would minimise the movement of their vehicles round the site, around school opening and closing times. He explained that they have no control over delivery times and this does cause problems. Also, they can use stop/go signals to control the flow of traffic, but by law they can only do it for ten minutes at a time.
The Parent Council will monitor this situation. Please let us know of any problems you see around the building site (with times and dates please).
We can all make a contribution to the road safety of our children by making sure we don’t cause any of the problems highlighted in red.
A significant number of Culter children within walking distance , walk to school. Not only does this reduce congestion, it benefits the environment, it helps the children maintain health and fitness and there is a growing body of evidence that it improves their concentration at school!
